This special set of masks represents Steve’s take on the classic 16th Century Italian caricatures that have endured for centuries on stage. They represent a stereotypical hierarchy of society that provides a great mechanism for storytelling be it comedy, tragedy, or an infusion of both.

We designed these masks specifically to help teachers, so if you would like to use them in an educational setting, please get in touch via our contact page so we can let you know how to go about this. The minimum age we suggest for this set would be 13+. Due to the level of expression required for Commedia Dell’ Arte masks, they take more dexterity to assemble than many of our animal masks. For younger children, our Woodland or Jungle Animal Sets work great.

Simply print the templates on paper, stick them to card, cut them out, match the numbers and join the tabs together. The Mask is scaled to fit an adult but you can make children's masks by scaling down the templates when you print - check our FAQ page for details. You will also need access to a printer, paper, card, tape, and scissors.The masks are designed to be easy to build: you don't need to be some sort of arts and crafts wizard.

Use this file to make as many masks as you like for yourself but please don’t share or steal the templates as there was a lot of work involved in creating them. If you want to use them for any other reason then please get in touch.

Used in a School setting

I finished teaching a unit on Commedia Dell 'Arte, and these were the perfect way to introduce my students to working and acting with masks. They loved it, the designs are intricate, but they turned out really well.

Amazing templates! Although the time it says on the sheet does not reflect the actual timings - Pantalone and Arlecchino are around 40-45 mins to do and then Il Capitano took around 1 hour 20. Brilliantly durable and clear to make though

Covid Safe, fun and builds literacy!!

Wintercroft has provided Arts educators with a fun and safe mask-making tool to use with students whether you are teaching from home, in classrooms or in a hybrid situation. The templates are wonderfully engineered - ingenious actually! Not only can students work on developing their characters for the stage, but Wintercroft has cleverly provided students with an engaging activity that builds literacy skills (by asking students to follow instructions precisely in order to make their masks). I highly recommend purchasing sets of the templates for your students. Very affordable.
