My name is Steve Wintercroft and since 2013 my wife, Marianne and I have been designing and supplying unique masks to creative people all over the World. Along the way, we have met so many incredible people and there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t meet at least one more. We believe that the urge to create is something that we all have in common as human beings. These masks provide a therapeutic, satisfying way to connect with a side of ourselves that we might not even have known was there.
Masks From Scrap
Some years ago, I received an invite to a friend’s Halloween party, but struggling for costume ideas and short of time, I raided the recycling bin and gathered together a pile of packaging cardboard. I then sat down with some parcel tape, a pair of scissors and plenty of hot tea. An hour or so later and after some trial and error I had made myself an animal mask. The mask was well received so I decided to redesign it and make the templates available and accessible to everyone. The goal was to create a set of masks that could be built by anyone, using local materials, removing the need for mass manufacturing or shipping and with the minimum environmental impact.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
By supplying the templates digitally and enabling people to build the masks themselves, there is no energy wasted on manufacturing or shipping. The masks are intended to be built from discarded, reused or recycled card. For example, old cereal boxes are ideal. When you have finished with your mask you can strip the tape off and throw it in with the recycling.
DESIGNER AND CREATOR
A trained cabinet maker and self-taught surfboard shaper, Steve progressed from building boards in his back garden to owning one of the UK’s largest surfboard factories. In 2013, he left the surf industry to launch Wintercroft, an environmentally conscious design company specialising in helping people make Masks from waste card.
In a varied career Steve has published seven papercraft books and worked on projects for Damien Hirst, Sir Paul McCartney, Björk and Game of Thrones. This latest project is driven by his belief that“life is richer when we create the objects that surround us”
As a long-time writer and musician Fletch is fellow creative with a complimentary set of skills. As invaluable member of the team he is a role wandering publicist, marketing manager, content creator and editor.
As wife of Steve and co-owner of Wintercroft, Marianne lends her contrasting, harmonious multitude of skills to the business. Her organised, pragmatic approach brings order to a diverse creative company.
